The hallowed journalistic principle of balance creates its own falsehoods of a higher order.

Here's an absurd example: The fact that the stove is hot needs to be balanced with a minority vew that fire can be transcended by thought (Don't want to insult Tony Robins, or an indigenous fire walking tribe in the South Pacific, now do we?) hence a "highly reguarded, branded" news source must say that fire may or may not be hot, if it conforms to current journalistic ethics.

SIlly, hun?

But any political consultant of national order will tell you that the key operating tool of American politics (and PR in general) is to exploit the fairness doctrine to cast a set of "new truths" on the news. And it works.

So, while I deplore the abject falsehoods that spin around the web I think we need to reach for a new ethical standard that takes into account bias, philosophy and facts. Because certainly the traditions of the Brands out there are not serving us well.

I do agree with you, this trend does bode well for writers, but the brands of import will be new brands, micro brands, that link content to author and (perhaps) bypass the media delivery tools of old. Anonymity is the enemy of truth, and as writers, isn't anonymity what we spend out whole lives fearing?

(Am I showing my bias?...lol... Great site btw)

Doug
www.dougist.com

Re: Calling All Angels

I'm so very sorry to hear about your husband. People have been complaining of how they are being ripped off by Google Adsense and Google Adwords. Google is being sued right now by thousands of companies for their unethical practices. Google is only in it for the money! Google Adwords is a rip off itself. Bidding on keywords is such as sham!

Bidvertiser jumped on the bandwagon and they are no better than Google Adwords! Some companies have even complained that Google has hired others to click on ads so they can free up 'space' for other potential buyers. I don't know how true this is, but Google is starting to leave a bad taste in people's mouths.

Re: Google CEO Speaks Out

While I am the first to agree that the focus on content is good for authors in the long run, it is worth noting that this does lead to a "get content at all cost" mentality among many and it will lead to a secondary rise in plagiarism and automatic content generation. This means that, though writers will find good business on the Web, protecting their work will be both more important and more difficult.

It is the duality of the Web, for every good, there must come some evil...

Re: Google CEO Speaks Out

How many times over the past few years have we discussed this? Maybe Google is eavesdropping on IM messages and finally realizing THEY did in fact create an ugly monster.
Google Adwords itself is horrendous. I remember the days when I could click a Google Adwords link and find something useful. Those days are gone and all you are left with is the same old shoddy sites. They must be making money though because their links keep showing up.
I no longer click Google's suggestions. If it has the link on the ad, I will type that into my address bar. I'm usually left disappointed.

I was a bit 'upset' that Google's CEO said, (paraphrased from memory) "you guys created the content". This is true, but writers were only following the guidelines set by..you guessed it..Google.

I personally think this PageRank crap is just that...crap. I've seen horrible sites with a great PR. I've seen great sites with no PR. So the little mousetrap they built has malfunctioned.

I wanted to add this link as well. I enjoyed the comments here as much as I did the main piece.
http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2008/10/08/th...

Re: I Love To Write Day - November 15, 2008

Awesome! It will affect us all, for when the economy is bad companies make cutbacks and marketing is often one of the first cutback targets.

We have been experiencing a marketing boom in the blogsophere for quite a while now that's about to bust. The reliance on passive advertising like Adsense provided for money-making opportunities by simply providing a place for advertising to reside is about to change. Those who clicked the ads did so during the days of easy credit but what the future bodes is that easy credit will no longer be the order of the day.

When you're blogging for money, in essence, you are providing a platform for the sale of marketing services. What most make money bloggers have been reliant upon is passive keyword dependent advertising like Adsense in combination with affiliate schemes, etc.
I agree with you that bloggers, who intend to utilize Adsense, will be on a learning curve because now more than ever before, how how well they do will be based on their ability to understand search engine optimization and how to apply it to their blogs.

The bottom line is that those who intend to continue to make money online will have to adapt to survive and, when it comes to seeking out new income strategies I'll be recommending your blog.

Re: Freelance Writers in an Uncertain Economy

Uh... You can also find some great content from the other members if you look around. Since it is now a psuedononymous work, it lasts 95 years from the date of creation, instead of seventy years past the death of the author. Not a big deal, but a technicality.

Great article as usual.

Re: Using A Pen Name

LOL.
